Memories wash over me from every corner
Flooding my heart down to my soul
Careful not to drown in yesterday
Heart quickens, breath shallow
Gripping the wheel tighter with white knuckles
The only thing that remains constant
Is change.
There’s still some buildings that remain as steadfast lighthouses
But like the tides coming and going
There’s still more that have been reshaped, eroded and rebuilt
Leaving ghosts of memories once haunting
The memories hide behind every corner
Threatening to wash over me
They make me gasp for breath
I feel them down to my core
I do not have to live like that
I choose to keep sailing further out to sea
Because you don’t find courage near the familiar
And this certainly isn’t my home of comfort any longer
The horizon beckons
And my heart sails on
